"What is an essay? An essay is a composition on a specific theme, subject, or topic. It is a non-fiction exercise for the expression of your ideas and opinions. There are other formats for writing an essay; but, in this course I am presenting a basic format that can be used successfully at all levels of education. Marie provides the basic framework and outlines the points for composing an essay, then goes on to elaborate on each of those points, including the pre-writing preliminaries of organizing your thoughts and deciding on a theme. She talks about using footnotes and bibliographies when writing Research Essays, and provides definitions and explanations.
